Lab Chemical Storage Flowchart

Lab Chemical Storage Flowchart

Summary

Use this flowchart to identify lab chemical storage groups and recommended storage locations.

This information does not apply to hazardous waste, compressed gases, or controlled substances.

To use this flowchart:

  1. Review general lab chemical storage guidelines.
  2. Begin at the top of the flowchart (Start section) and move downward until you find a Globally Harmonized System (GHS) pictogram on the chemical label.
    • If the flowchart returns you to another pictogram, continue to move downward until you reach another pictogram on the chemical label.
    • Many chemicals have multiple GHS pictograms. Choose the first pictogram that matches one on the chemical label (the pictogram closest to the top of the flowchart).
    • If the chemical does not have a GHS label, search Sigma Aldrich or review the ChemWatch Gold safety data sheet (SDS) for the same product.
  3. If the chemical label does not include any of the pictograms on the flowchart or meet any of these conditions, the storage group is General Storage (GS).
  4. Read any storage location and additional recommendations associated with the storage group.
  5. Review Section 7.2: Conditions for Safe Storage and Section 10: Stability and Reactivity of the chemical SDS to determine any special storage requirements and to verify compatibility.
